Black Knight Staring at Painting
The painting of the mysterious Black Knight (Chevalier Noir) portrays an ancient holder of the Black Cat Miraculous. The knight wears a Late Middle Ages plate armour over the chain mail, according to the European custom during the XV century.

The head and shoulders are protected by the iron mesh camail. On the cuirass there is the symbol of the Order of the Guardians of the Miraculous. The symbol resembles the shape of a labyrinth and the Chinese character 壽 shòu (longevity), which is one of the five blessings according to the Chinese tradition.

Instead of the sword, the Black Knight holds the staff of the flag with the coat of arms of the Black Cat House. The flag represents the purple blazon on a white background, featuring the heads of three black cats and surmounted by a golden crown.

The coat of arms of the Black Cat House is a graphic reworking of the coat of arms of the Kingdom of France, used since 1376. The blazon is azure, surmounted by a golden crown set of precious stones, and featuring three golden lilies (fleur de lys d'or).

The Black Cat House insignia is also visible inside the rhombus of the armour. The feline is depicted in profile, with forepaws stretched forward and the tail raised, in the position that recalls the heraldic coat of arms of the lion rampant, symbol of strength, courage and nobility.

The shape of the armour and the style of the flag enable to determine a precise historical period and to hypothesize that the ancient Black Cat Miraculous holder may have been one of the comrades in arms of Jeanne d'Arc, who was the ancient Ladybug Miraculous holder.

The knight cannot be identified with certainty with a really existed historical figure, since the painting is the result of an artistic reconstruction. The beautiful face of the mysterious Black Knight is taken from the painting Man with a Glove by the Italian Renaissance artist Tiziano.

By mirroring the painting by Tiziano and isolating the detail of the young man's face, it is possible to recognize the source of inspiration for the ancient Black Cat Miraculous holder. The knight's face is perfectly identical, despite being framed by the camail.
Comparison between the Black Knight and Man with a Glove by Tiziano.
Painted around 1523, Man with a Glove is kept in the Louvre Museum. With a skilful use of colours and light, Tiziano portrays an Italian gentleman, still adolescent, with a dreamy and melancholic gaze, whose body language suggests strength and kindness of heart.

The young man with dark hair and fair complexion has a discreet elegance, he wears refined clothes without showing off his wealth; he pulled off a leather glove, leaving his right hand uncovered and showing a precious golden ring with the emblem.

By a curious coincidence, just like the gentleman represented in the painting, in the episode Copycat (Imposteur), Adrien takes off the right glove of his fencing uniform to become Chat Noir. The shot focuses on his right hand with the ring of the Black Cat.
